Term 1, Week 10 (9th March 09)

Man and beast face off in Sumatra (World Page A8)

Q1)What is illegal logging?
Illegal logging is the harvest, transportation, purchase or sale of timber in violation of national laws. The harvesting procedure itself may be illegal, including using corrupt means to gain access to forests. It can also destroy protected habitats and also endanger the animals living in that area.

Q2)What can you do to stop the Sumatran tiger from extinction?

First , we can stop purchasing medicine made from Sumatran tigers . Not only is it illegal , we are also putting ourselves at risk. The Sumatran tiger could have an infectious disease . By consuming medicine made of Sumatran tigers , we can easily fall prey to such diseases. Ironic how something that's supposed to heal you can make you more sick .
By stopping the purchase of such medicine , the demand for it will decrease . Soon, the poachers will find that they will not make much of a profit .
Then , the poachers will stop hunting the poor tigers of Sumatra .
It all actually starts with us . We are the reason why there is such atrocious acts.We are the reason why people are sinning . We are the reason for the death of more than 1 million Sumatran tigers.
